Getting there
By plane to Split or Zadar airports  /flight-info.asp, then hire a car or take the bus to Split ferryport
Take the car ferry or fast catamaran from Split to Vela Luka, see http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2 for timetable.
Or
By plane to Dubrovnik airport  /flight-info.asp, then hire a car or take the bus to Orebic or Ploce on the Peljesac peninsular, then a fairly short ferry journey to Korcula town.

Demography
Korcula is the sixth largest of the Croatian Islands, being approx 47 km long by 6km wide. Highest peak is Klupca at 568 metres above sea level. Population is approx 16,500 people.

Industries
The economy, besides tourism, is based on agriculture, namely the cultivation of grape vines, olives and fruit, and fishing and fish processing.
Korcula and Peljesac wines are among the best to be found in Croatia.

Korcula
Korcula town ( city ) is at the easternmost end of the Island. and just a 15 minute ferry ride from the Peljesac peninsular town of Orebic.
Looking like a miniature Dubrovnik its fortified Old Town walls and towers hide a maze of stepped streets.
Korcula town, population 3000 is filled with galleries, museums, restuarants and pavement cafes, and is an excellent base from which to explore the rest of this beautiful island

Lumbarda
7 kilometres along the coastline  from Korcula you will find the pretty fishermans village of Lumbarda, population 1200.
The road from Korcula to Lumbarda takes you through pine woods and olive groves.
The ever popular tourist spot of Lumbarda is unique in having sandy beaches ( Vela Przina, Bilin, Zal and Tatinja )
From Lumbarda it is possible to take boat excursions to the islands of Miljet ( national park ), Lastovo and also to the Skoji islands ( Korcula archipelago )

Smokvica
About 30 kilometres from Korcula, along the spine lies the small inland village of Smokvica ( pronounced smokvitza ), population 1200, which nestles nicely on the southern slopes of a hill, covered with vineyards that produce grapes for Posip wine.
smokvica has much of interest to see including a large classical neo-roman church, an imposing baroque loggia, and several small mediaeval churches.
From Smokvica you can take the top road towards Blato, but better still, head south towards Brna bay.
Brna is a well known tourist destination with both rock and pebble beaches, surrounded by lush vegetation and pine forests.
The large Feral hotel, with 80 rooms ls situated on the peninsular, and well hidden in the woodland.
A fiftten minute coastal walk will take you to another delightful bay Istruga, nice for sunbathing and swimming, the sand here is said to have medicinal properties.
Taking the coastal road with little traffic leads you through the small picturesque coves of Prizba and Grscica, overlooking the uninhabited Islands of Stupa, Crklica, Sridnjak, and Vrhovnjak, to which excursions can be arranged.

Vela Luka
A really nice port at the western end of Island Korcula that has everything to offer for a fairly long stay. Vela Luka is a good sized town with plenty of habour front restuarants and shops along its lively Riva.
Coastal paths and routes are plentiful, ideal area for walking and cycling.
There is a good camping site ( Mindel ) about 5km west of Vela Luka, a little out in the wilds, but in a lovely setting.
